Cycling Hydration Vest vs Jersey-Pocket Bottles

Need more water than your frame bottles can carry? A cycling hydration vest and jersey-pocket bottles offer two ways to add capacity. Your choice depends on how much water you need to carry, how you prefer to drink and what else needs space on your ride.

Carry extra water in your cycling jersey

BackBottle is shaped for jersey pockets and holds 18 US fluid ounces, approximately 530 mL. Use it alongside your frame bottles when you want extra water without adding a hydration vest. Two bottles add approximately 1.06 L; three add approximately 1.59 L if your jersey pockets can securely support them.

The flat back is designed to minimize rolling. Choose supportive pockets that hold the bottle firmly, and check fit and access before riding. Bottles occupy space you might otherwise use for food, a phone or tools.

How does it compare with USWE and CamelBak?

The USWE Outlander XC 2L hydration pack and CamelBak Chase Race 4 hydration vest each include a 1.5 L reservoir. Their reservoir-and-hose format offers a different drinking arrangement from removing a bottle from a jersey pocket. Check each model's fit and storage information when deciding what to carry.

A single BackBottle adds less water than either of those reservoirs. Its role is flexible extra capacity using your existing jersey: bring the number of bottles your pockets support and your route calls for. You do not need a separate wearable pack for the bottles.

Which setup fits your ride?

Consider jersey-pocket bottles when you already ride in a supportive cycling jersey, want to supplement frame bottles and prefer drinking from a removable bottle. Consider a hydration vest or pack when you prefer a reservoir hose or want the storage and carrying system of that particular model.

For longer routes, plan water capacity around refill opportunities and your own needs. There is no single setup that suits every rider or ride.
